The neighbourhood cafe at South Point Mall fares great both on the taste and experience quotients.
Does a cup of tea or coffee really need a reason to be enjoyed, one may wonder? Is it more of the company we seek while reading a book or is it a reason to chat up with friends or does it act as a stress-buster? For different occasions and for different people, these “cups of wonder” have different meanings. However, this cuppa can just be the reason to be at Coffee and Chai Co, the exclusive neighbourhood café at South Point Mall which, over the last six months of its existence in the township, has managed to carve a niche for itself in the hearts of DLF5 residents.
Done up in a beautiful mix of mint, lemon green and bright pink against a brown and off-white background, Coffee & Chai Co, on the upper ground floor of the mall, is where guests are greeted by a courteous staff that makes one feel at home the moment they step in. Apart from the live kitchen and dessert counter, not to be missed are the huge posters on tea tourism from India and abroad that adorn the walls of the cafe. Perhaps what has resulted in Coffee & Chai Co getting popular among DLF5 residents is the personal attention the owners, Vishesh and Anjali Manaktala, give to their guests. In fact, they help you shortlist from the long list of delectable delights on the menu.
“We want Coffee & Chai Co to be the best neighbourhood chill-out coffee and tea joint where guests drop in to have a five-star experience at an affordable cost and where people need not be dressed in formals. Most importantly, whatever we serve on the menu is fresh from the oven,” says co-owner Anjali.
When Coffee and Chai Co rolled out six months back, it only had a few dishes on the menu but more were added to it on the suggestion of guests. These included a few vegetarian delicacies and eggless cakes. In fact, it is the only place in Gurgaon that serves Haagen Daaz ice-cream by the scoop and an amazing variety of ice-cream cakes.
Also available are around 15 varieties of tea like Mint Tea with Fennel (`95), Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe (`95), Capputeano (`95) and Hand-rolled Organic Tea (`110). However, we opted for the White Tea (`120) as it is a leat processed oxidised tea that tastes a bit fruity. To give it company, we zeroed in on Humus and Pita Bread from the Anytime Bites section. However, one can also opt for pakoras: Mix (`150), Paneer (`175) and Chicken (`200) else go in for Sesame Fish Sticks (`200), Chilli Cheese Toast (`150), Vegetarian Quasedilla (`200) or Tomato Bruschetta with Mozarella (`175).
For the main course, we ordered an Exotic Veggie (`295). The thin-crispy-cheesy-veggie pizza had a generous topping of olives, cheese, broccoli, zucchini, bell peppers, basil and mushrooms. We next dug into Cottage Cheese Steak with Mexican rice (`275). The steak was perfectly cooked with the taste of mushroom and corns oozing out perfectly while the accompanying creamy jalapeno sauce was simply delicious. This combination was a stealer and something for which I’ll surely be back at Coffee & Chai Co soon.
We ended our meal with small helpings of Carrot Cake, Brownie Sundae and the specialty of the season, Mango Cheese Cake. Must admit, they were all really delicious but what appealed to us were the eggless nottoo- sweet carrot cake with a fair proportion of walnuts and raisins and the brownie with a layer of chocolate mousse sandwiched
between fudge on top and brownie as the base. As one scooped through the fudge into the creamy mousse and the brownie, the three brought out an amazing flavour which is hard to describe in words. And it is impossible to resist a second helping of this amazing delicacy.
